Athens Little League is a member of Little League International. Begun over 50 years ago by volunteers in this community, it has literally introduced thousands of boys and girls to the love of sport, competition and health. Beginning with a scattered group of kids on public parks, VFW fields and church grounds, ALL now resides at the Holland Youth Sports Complex.
Athens Little League exists not just to develop children’s baseball skills. Its real mission is to serve the community by working with Athens boys and girls—from ages five to fourteen—to help them develop character and learn the virtues of cooperation and teamwork.
The players in our league come from every one of Clarke County’s public and private schools. By offering scholarships to families for whom the regular fee would be a burden, Athens Little League gives all children an opportunity for both character development and physical activity, as well as a chance to learn the skills of a specific sport. Every child who registers plays on a team; no child is ever cut.
The success of Athens Little League has largely been due to the volunteer spirit of our player families. Over 90% of our families serve the league in some way—by coaching, selling concessions, keeping score, serving as a team mom, sponsoring a team, or in some other important role.
Athens Little League now embarks upon a project that requires an expansion of our volunteer circle. It is our hope that the entire Athens community will join us as we begin to build a new baseball field at the Holland Youth Sports Complex—a field that will be dedicated to the lasting memory of Allen and Madison Mays. This project will allow our league to grow; it will also honor a beloved coach and player from our Little League family.
